What are the four main types of welds?

The four main types of welds are Fillet, Groove, Plug or Slot, and Surfacing.

Fillet Welds

Fillet welds are commonly used for T-joints, lap-joints, and corner joints. They are a type of weld that is used to join two pieces of metal at right angles.

Groove Welds

Groove welds are used to make edge-to-edge connections. They are created by preparing the edges of the metal pieces to form a groove where the weld is placed.

Plug or Slot Welds

Plug or Slot welds are useful for attaching two overlapping pieces of metal. They are often used in sheet metal fabrication and assembly.

Surfacing Welds

Surfacing welds are used to add or replace metal on a surface for wear-resistance. This type of weld is common in repairs and maintenance of machinery and equipment. Each of these welding types have specific applications based on the geometrical configuration of the workpieces being joined, their material composition, weight-bearing requirements, and other factors.
